On the side · the day itself
This is a one-day coach tour from Tokyo that packs the famous Hakone sights into a single loop and adds the lakes on the north side of Mount Fuji. You meet at one of 2 points in Tokyo, and the operator emails the details before 19:00 on the day before.
The coach takes 2 hours to Hakone Shrine, where the listing gives 40 minutes, then 20 minutes at the torii standing in the water. A short drive brings you to the Togendai pier on Lake Ashi, then 30 minutes on the Hakone Ropeway and 40 minutes at Owakudani.
After an hour's drive comes Lake Yamanaka, with 20 minutes listed, then Oshino Hakkai with 40, before the 2-hour ride back to Tokyo. It is a full, brisk day: the classic Hakone loop and a taste of the Fuji lakes, without a single connection to plan.
Why this day
This day tour leaves Tokyo for Hakone Shrine and its torii in the water, the Togendai pier on Lake Ashi, the Hakone Ropeway and Owakudani, then crosses to Lake Yamanaka and Oshino Hakkai near Mount Fuji. It is rated 4.91 from 872 reviews and starts from $50. The ropeway ticket is included; the boat ticket is not.

On the side · why hakone
Hakone is a mountain valley inside Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, close enough to Tokyo for a day out. People have bathed in its hot springs since at least the eighth century, and it officially counts 17 of them today.
It was also a barrier. The Edo-period Tokaido highway crossed these mountains, and the Hakone Checkpoint, established in 1619, controlled the road between Edo and Kyoto. Cedars planted by the shogunate still line the old road near the lake.
Today the valley mixes all of it: a sculpture park, a mountain railway that climbs with switchbacks, steaming volcanic ground and a lake with a red torii on its shore. This tour takes you to the lake, the shrine and the steam; our guides cover the rest.

Our guide worked hard to get us to every stop and we had a great day. Fuji stayed hidden by the weather, but we knew that was always a gamble.”

It rained on my day in the rainy season, yet I still had a great time at the different landmarks, with plenty of time for restroom breaks and souvenirs.”

On the side · what reviewers say
The tour is rated 4.91 from 872 reviews. In the recent reviews we read, the guides are the theme that comes up again and again: friendly, knowledgeable, patient with a big group and good at keeping everyone to time.
Reviewers also mention the pace. Several say how much they saw in one day and that there was enough time at each stop, while families note that the short stops kept children interested. A few would have liked a little longer at the final village.
Weather comes up too. Some reviewers saw Mount Fuji, others saw only cloud, and one called it a gamble from the start. The tour's own listing is honest about that: Fuji views depend on the weather and are not guaranteed.

View tourOn the side · the seasons
Hakone changes completely through the year. Cherry blossoms come in late March to early April, azaleas follow until late May, and hydrangeas bloom from late May to late July.
Fall colours run from early October to early December, best in November, and winter brings snowy days and illuminations. Summer is cooler than Tokyo, which made Hakone a retreat from the city heat.
Busy dates matter on a coach day. Golden Week, Obon from 10 to 16 August and the November leaves bring crowds, and the tour lists 8 to 16 August 2026 as a peak week with frequent traffic jams.

On the side · fuji and cloud
The tour title promises Mount Fuji, but the listing is clear that visibility depends on the weather and the view cannot be guaranteed.
The good news is that the day works without Fuji. The shrine, the steaming crater, the ropeway over the forest and the spring ponds of Oshino Hakkai are worth seeing in any weather, and mist makes the cedar forests around the shrine look their best.
Mountain weather changes fast, and the upper valley runs colder than the plains. Odakyu Hakone says Lake Ashi and Owakudani are usually 3 to 4°C cooler than the Yumoto area, so a jacket is worth carrying in every season.
Your Hakone day

On the side · tickets on the day
Read the inclusions carefully, because the title mentions a Lake Ashi cruise. The tour includes a one-way Hakone Ropeway ticket, a professional guide, round-trip transfers from the meeting point, and taxes, parking, tolls, fuel and environmental fees.
Not included are meals, personal travel or accident insurance, paid attraction tickets for children aged 0 to 3, and the Lake Ashi cruise ticket. Bring yen for lunch and, if you want to ride the boat, for the fare.
The listing also covers only basic travel insurance, so arrange your own if you want more cover. None of this is unusual for a coach day; it simply pays to know it before you compare prices with other tours.

On the side · the stops
Hakone Shrine stands among tall cedars by Lake Ashi, and its torii in the water is the classic Hakone photograph. The listing gives 40 minutes at the shrine and 20 at the torii. From 29 December to 10 February the torii is closed, and the tour spends the extra time at the shrine.
Owakudani is the steaming volcanic valley at the top of the ropeway. The tour gives it 40 minutes, time for the views over the vents and a walk around the viewing area.
On the Fuji side, Lake Yamanaka gets 20 minutes and Oshino Hakkai 40, a village of clear spring-fed ponds. They make a calm end to the day before the drive back to Tokyo.
Hakone in one number
Hakone officially counts 17 hot springs.
People have bathed in them since at least the eighth century, and a guide from 1811 already listed seven, from Yumoto to Ashinoyu.
On the side · what to bring
The listing asks for comfortable shoes and a jacket. There are steps at the shrine and some walking at every stop, and the higher stops are colder than Tokyo.
Food and drinks are not allowed in the vehicle, so plan to eat at the stops. Carry yen for lunch, snacks and the boat fare, and a small bag you can keep with you all day.
If you travel with luggage, tell the operator in advance; additional fees may apply. Children aged 0 to 3 must be registered with customer service ahead of the day.
The practical part
On the side · the guide
The live guide speaks Chinese and English.
The listing adds a fair warning: with a small group, the driver may also act as the guide, with limited English commentary and none while driving. That is worth knowing if commentary matters a lot to you.
Seats are first come, first served and cannot be reserved, so arrive at the meeting point on time if you want a window. On weekends and public holidays the route, the order of stops and the time at each may change with traffic.
At one of 2 points in Tokyo. The meeting point depends on the option you book; details are emailed before 19:00 on the day before.
Hakone, then the Fuji lakes. Hakone Shrine and its torii, the Togendai pier, the ropeway, Owakudani, Lake Yamanaka and Oshino Hakkai.
No, the boat ticket is extra. A one-way Hakone Ropeway ticket is included; the cruise fare and meals are not.
2 hours each way. The coach takes 2 hours from Tokyo and 2 hours back, with shorter drives between stops.
Chinese and English. With a small group the driver may act as guide, with limited English commentary and none while driving.
Not for everyone. It is not suitable for pregnant women, wheelchair users, people with mobility impairments or people over 70.
Only if you tell them. Tell the operator in advance if you bring luggage; additional fees may apply.
Not in midwinter. It is closed from 29 December to 10 February, and the tour gives that time to Hakone Shrine instead.
Free up to 24 hours before. You get a full refund up to 24 hours ahead; cancelling on the day is non-refundable.
The tour still runs. The listing says Fuji views depend on the weather and are not guaranteed; the Hakone stops are worth it in any weather.
On the side · on your own
This tour shows the famous upper loop. Hakone has much more for a second day: the Hakone Open-Air Museum with about 120 sculptures outdoors, the mountain railway that climbs with switchbacks, and the stone-paved old Tokaido road.
Getting there on your own is easy. The limited express from Shinjuku reaches Hakone-Yumoto in about 80 minutes, and from there trains and buses climb into the valley.
Stay a night if you can. A ryokan with its own bath, a dinner in the inn and a morning walk turn a Hakone day trip into a proper rest. Our guides to the onsen, the museum, the railway and the old road help you plan it.

On the side · honest caveats
It is made for a traveller with a single spare day, keen on the classic Hakone sights and the Fuji lakes, who would rather not plan transport. It is a long, efficient, sociable day, and the rating of 4.91 from 872 reviews suggests it delivers that well.
It is not suitable for pregnant women, people with mobility impairments, wheelchair users or people over 70. It is also not the day for a hot-spring soak or a museum; there is no time for either on the route.
Booking carries little risk: you may cancel at no cost until 24 hours ahead, and nothing is charged when you reserve. Cancelling on the day, or not joining for personal reasons, is non-refundable.
